This Trader Joe’s heirloom chicken is priced at $2.99/pound, generally doesn’t contain giblets, and is perfect for roasting in the oven. The skin can easily get extra crispy with heirloom chickens, although the flavor isn’t that different than a normal chicken, other than sometimes a little more natural chicken flavor. These are priced significantly more than the regular Trader Joe’s chickens, but depending on how important the fact that this chicken is slow growth, air chilled and pasture raised, it could be worth the extra money. The heritage breeds that are used for heirloom chickens grow slower than most birds, so it allows the chickens to supposedly be happier and healthier…..…….
- All natural whole heirloom chicken
- Net Weight: averages around 2.5 pounds
- Slow growth, air chilled, pasture raised, no added hormones or antibiotics

Trader Joe’s Heirloom Chicken, All Natural
This Trader Joe’s heirloom chicken has a nice flavor to it, but I don’t think you’ll notice any significant difference in the various whole chickens at Trader Joe’s. I’d love to know if anyone has found this tastes a lot better or how it compares to other chickens in terms of how well it cooks. Either way, this seems to be a lot healthier for you than the standard grown run of the mill whole chickens. Put this on a spit on the grill or put it on a roasting pan in the oven. However you eat it, you can at least know that it was raised happier and healthier than most chickens! And if you can’t make it out to Trader Joe’s, give these items a shot to help with cooking……

Trader Joe’s BBQ Chicken pizza review
I bought one last week to cook in my new air fries. I’ll never buy a regular chicken again. Thank you Trader Joe’s!
Glad you like the Trader Joe’s heirloom chicken Kathy! I’ll have to try making it in an air fryer!
My tj’s says no idea when restocking. I will buy a dozen
Claire, I hope your Trader Joe’s restocks their heirloom chickens soon. Let us know how it turns out if you ever get your hands on one!
I bought 2 “Heirloom Chickens, Trader Joe’s All Natural” 10 days ago. Yes, the texture and the taste of the chickens are a lot better and natural. I just bought another two. I believe that it is even more important to raise chicken in a natural way than just feed them organic food. Therefore I prefer to pasture-raised slow growth chickens than organic chicken. Also the size of the chicken is perfect, not too big.
Thank you Trader Joe’s!
Sharon, I’m so glad you like these Trader Joe’s heirloom chickens! It is definitely nice knowing these are all natural chickens and come from a good source.
I’ve seen these and currently buy heirloom chicken from Cooks Venture. Are the chickens you sell Certified Humane? Can you share who the supplier is?
Thank you.
Kimberly, These Trader Joe’s heirloom chickens are humanely raised, but Trader Joe’s does not share who the supplier is unfortunately for these chickens.
I happen to know about suppliers…. lets just say: you are in very good hands with the Trader Joe’s chicken
I want to buy a case! They remind me of the farm fresh poultry I grew up on.
Eileen, I’m so glad you like these Trader Joe’s heirloom chickens!
I was surprised at how good, healthy tasty this chicken is. I’ve been surching a a pasture raised chicken that was not on a organic feed. Organic is for fruits and vegetables not chickens. I tried this chicken on my air fryer. Loved it.
Maricela, I was also surprised how good these Trader Joe’s heirloom chickens taste. That’s awesome that you cooked it in the air fryer!
Love the heirloom chickens I stock up when I go….the last one I did in the crock pot and finished under the broiler.. Amazing..is it possible to know what breed of heirloom they are?…
Leanne, I’m not sure what breed the Trader Joe’s heirloom chickens are, but the crock pot/broiler method sounds like a great idea!
What type of heirloom chicken is the Trader Joe’s Heirloom Chicken. My ranch burned in the Carr Fire. I used to raise and butcher Deleware and Wyandotte. Couldn’t beat the flavor. I miss them and hope TJ continues providing sustainable humanly raised options of protein. I would love if their lamb was from US and if they offered goat and rabbit, both sustainable and healthy protein options.
I just made one in the slow cooker and it came out fabulous. Seasoned well with Traeger Chicken Rub, put on a small rack to keep off bottom of cooker. 3 hours on high. Boom. Delicious chicken. I will buy this again. P.S. I usually don’t like breast meat. This breast meat was great texture and flavor. Good thing cause these little guys don’t have much thigh meat, which is usually my go-to.
I so agree about “ would love if their lamb was from US and if they offered goat and rabbit, both sustainable and healthy protein options.”
AND. bring back the can’t cake!!!
Can I have cooking instructions please? For Air Fryer or Oven. I am horrible at cooking chicken!
Cook longer at a lower temperature.
Are these chickens pasture fed? or are they also fed grains?
I was told they were pasture raised. They eat bugs and worms…but also have a supplemental feed of non-gmo grain.
Can you please tell me what kind of grains are used on the supplemental feed please?
I’m trying to find out whether the feed for this chicken is supplemented with corn or soy. Can’t seen to find this information. (Heritage Pasture Raised Chicken – Trader Joe’s.)
Yes I would like to know if these chickens are fed corn and soy
I was wondering the same, also oats? I want to buy it but need more information please.
