Trader Joe’s Blood Orange Cake Mix, with Icing

This Trader Joe’s blood orange cake mix is a new product for 2021, and has a pretty orange color to it, is very sweet and comes with plenty of delicious icing to drizzle over the top. The tastes of this blood orange cake mix are not especially subtle, but are more super sweet and bright. As with most Trader Joe’s cake mixes, this is really easy to bake in a loaf pan, and the taste and texture of this blood orange cake is excellent. It will fill your kitchen with a really good smell, and just looking at the golden orange color of it after it’s done is really satisfying. Just don’t forget to drizzle the included icing, once you combine it with butter and water, over the top of it!

Trader Joe’s Blood Orange Cake Mix

There are so many good Trader Jo’s cake mixes, but I think this blood orange cake mix is among my new favorites! It almost reminds me of the Trader Joe’s meyer lemon cake mix that is available at certain times of the year, but even sweeter! I think people will really like this not just for the sweet taste, but for the way it looks with the pretty orange color. Let me know what you think of this compared to other TJs cake mixes. And if you can’t make it out to TJs, give these items a try…..

        1. Thanks for the question Shirley. You can make muffins with the trader joe’s blood orange cake mix and they’ll turn out just fine, with a slightly different density. In terms of cooking time make sure to keep an eye on them a lot sooner than you would a loaf since they likely wont take as long.

  1. Have you calculated the nutrition facts without the icing? this would be so helpful to know!

I am wanting to enjoy it and may try to use less icing–

  2. Just bought a box this past weekend and plan to try throwing in some chocolate chips as I loooooove chocolate and orange together (think a shot of Cointreau in my hot cocoa). Glad to see your positive review of this new item. Can’t wait to bake this weekend!

  3. I really like it, the loaf is very sweet even without the frosting. Some may find it too sweet but I think it is a nice treat. Enjoy!

  4. OMG, my husband made it tonight and it is delicious. The flavors are strong, but oh so good. We will be making a trek to TJs to pick up some more boxes of it.

  5. I’m not one to complain or post my complaints, but this is by far the worst product I’ve ever bought from TJs! It was so bad, I almost suspect a problem at the factory! When mixing he cake batter, I saw bf globs of bright red food coloring. Took a bit of work, to smooth those out, yet some still remained in the baked cake. The taste of both be batter and the cake was terrible. It tasted of chemicals and artificial sweetener (like pouring a Splenda packet straight in your mouth). We didn’t even bother mixing the icing. After several tries, the cake ended up in the garbage. Normally, I’m a huge fan of Trader Joe’s products, but this one is a mistake.

    1. That’s such a bummer Kelly! I’m so sorry you didn’t like the Trader Joe’s blood orange cake. It is definitely super sweet so I can see if that’s not your thing you may not like this. In terms of the blobs of food colouring, I haven’t noticed that. In any case, thanks for the honest review.

    2. Very interesting to see your comment. I sent a box of the mix to my mother who is a fan of boxed mixes but never shops at Trader Joe’s.

She informed me the other day that she’d made the Blood Orange cake and it was THE WORST cake she’d ever made/ate in her life. According to her, it tasted terrible and had the consistency of lead. It wasn’t that it was sweet or orangy. It was just gross apparently. I had sent her some other TJ mixes and she’s informed me she’s throwing them all out. She’s 90 years old and doesn’t mince words if she’s got a problem with something.

Anyway, I am a huge fan of almost all TJ products and am having a hard time believing that it wasn’t somehow user error. So, I’m heading to TJ’s tonight to get a box to make it myself. I’ll report back here on the results! 🙂

      1. We thought it was gross too. None of my 3 kids liked it including my 7 yo who will eat all things sweet. It was pretty to look at but I’m afraid that’s the most positive thing I can say about it. I don’t think it’s so much user error or just different strokes for different folks.

  6. Is the Blood Orange Loaf cake mix seasonal? It is the bomb and like the Meyer’s Lemon Loaf cake mix should be soldiers year round! Both are absolutely delish!

    1. Leslie, it appears that Trader Joe’s is making the blood orange cake seasonal for now. I totally agree about the blood orange and Meyer Lemon cake. Absolutely worthy of year round status!

  7. I don’t understand why Trader Joe’s is selling a blood orange cake mix and
discontinued their blood orange marmalade. It was the best marmalade ever!
No sweet sticky mess like most marmalades, this one had the wonderful bitter tang of blood oranges with just a bit of sweetness. It was absolutely divine!
Please bring it back because who wants a bitter cake?

  8. I love this cake but had inconsistent results with the baking. I had baked two successfully then the third one came out way under done even though I used the same pan, oven settings and time. I had to throw it out as it was inedible. Not sure what that was about as I am an experienced baker and this was pretty straightforward. I am also not a fan of the seasonal product idea. Either offer it year round or don’t. It’s frustrating to find a product you like but you have a short window of time to buy it. Seems counterintuitive from a retail perspective. If you’re not a frequent shopper at and you missed the window of opportunity for a seasonal item, it leaves a negative feeling about the store. I understand that holiday themed items may not be available year-round but something as innocuous as a cake mix? Those can be served year round.

  9. I love the big Citrus flavor and color of this cake ! I made it in a
8×8 cake pan having greased and floured the pan; easy peezey & delicious with frosting just skimmed over surface and served with lots of sliced strawberries and a bit of ice cream or whipped cream ; this cake says “ celebrate “
